During my walk through the campus I came across many paintings that caught my attention, some more than others, especially those that I could either relate to or were telling a story through their photograph/ painting. One of the pieces that caught my attention was a collage of photographs portraying how art can bring hope to those experiencing difficult such as those that may be facing illnesses. The Apollonian effect brought by the piece is the logical reasoning as why the people would need hope, and it is because one of those people could be facing cancer, and one thing that can bring them joy and forget about the situation their facing is art. The Dionysian effect brought by the piece is the emotional value that is added, which makes you feel delighted that they find happiness in the simplicity of life. I believe the theme of this piece is trying to express to its audience that no matter the age group art is a way to leave the world for a brief time, its an escape from reality that brings that people together, and something that anyone can take part in. The second piece that I found interesting was the “The Grand Canal” by Edouard Manet. I thoroughly enjoyed it because it reminded me of the city in Italy called Venice, with a lake passing all throughout the city. The Dionysian effect brought by this art is the emotions it brings out of its audience, such as for me, I think back to a vacation I once took, and the scenery was beautiful, and how nice it would be to return. I believe the art is trying to get its audience to notice the water, and to picture being present in that moment drifting away through an old city in a gondola. Pablo Picasso called the third artwork that drew me in “Old Guitarist”, because it the man in the painting seemed so lonely. I believe Picasso was attempting to convey the message of emptiness, and by this I mean he wants to show his audience that the guitarist has is own form of art, which is through music, and even though he’s alone, he remains whole by doing the one he loves. The painting consists of many blues, expressing sadness, which is the overall theme you conclude to by looking at the painting. The man is poor and dressed in tattered clothing and no shoes; he seems to be working as musician struggling for pay. The next painting I decided to write about was a piece that seemed to be representing a comic strip. A woman is refusing to ask for help because she either doesn’t like the man, or refuses to seem helpless. In this piece the Apollonian effect can be more easily described for because it brings the audience to think as to why the woman must be crying, and what the man must have done in order for her refusal of asking for help. The last artwork that caught my attention was a bunch of metal scraps all put together forming two infinity symbols. I believe the artist in this piece is displaying a theme of having fear of displaying who we really are. The artist is trying to convey that everyone has a secret, and art is theirs, and by putting themselves at risk they are letting others know that art brings them joy despite the critiques others may have on their form of art.
